ARPILLERAS

From the Collection of Marjorie Agosín

September 1 – October 1, 2021

Mazmanian Gallery is thrilled to present an exhibition of arpilleras, hand sewn quilts that tell the story of “Los Desaparecidos” (“the disappeared”) in Chile, from the private collection of Marjorie Agosín. This art form emerged as a female-led resistance movement in response to the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in 1970s Chile. The works are politically radical, feminist, and historically compelling; as well as compositionally and materially impacting.

Marjorie Agosín is the Andrew Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Wellesley College. She is an award-winning poet and Human Rights Activist. She has authored books of poetry, a memoir, and novels. Among the most recent are The Maps of Memory and a children’s book about the Arpilleras, Las Arpilleras: Una Historia Contada con Hilo y Aguja. Among her awards are The Pura Belpre award, a Fulbright and the Lifetime Achievement Award granted by the Government of Chile.
